SHŌGUN

September 29, 2024 by Samantha McRoberts

Feudal Japan won't unite without a fight.

FX’s Shōgun, based on James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600, at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” (Hiroyuki Sanada) is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

Forest Portraits: Our character portrait series for Shōgun debuted as the first series of assets following the first trailer, prior to the Key Art release. The portraits were accompanied with a short copy line introducing fans the characters. These portraits also highlighted the aesthetic beauty of the costumes.

On-Set Social BTS: Our team had the opportunity to have a social embed on set during the filming of FX’s Shōgun. Given the vastness of the sets and complexity of the show, we knew we had to create some stellar behind-the-scenes content to show fans what went into creating this epic saga. This content gave fans an exclusive glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and cultural authenticity behind the series.

Themes included Hair and Makeup, showcasing actors' transformations; Costume Design, highlighting historical accuracy; VFX, demystifying digital magic; Weapons Training, showing combat preparation; and Instructional Segments on cultural etiquette when it came to bowing and walking in Japan in the 1600s.

This content garnered significant organic earned media and played a crucial role in building a strong fan base. It fostered a deeper emotional connection with the audience, leading to increased engagement and loyalty. Our innovative approach set a new standard for fan engagement and significantly contributed to the series' success.

Poetry of Life & Death: This video series served as a pre-premiere teaser, offering insight into our main characters' motivations.

  • Social media assets for the first season garnered over 140M+ video views and 5.5M+ engagements.

  • An Instagram Reel posted on ShōgunFX celebrating the red carpet premiere went viral 8.4M+ organic views and 275K+ engagement.

  • We initiated the department's first full-scale social outreach campaign, securing 35 earned exclusive outlet placements and 25 synergy placements, resulting in over 100 social media posts.

Star Wars x Shōgun Collab: We partnered with the Star Wars team to create this unique asset, highlighting the parallels between samurai and Jedi. George Lucas drew inspiration from samurai culture when creating the Jedi, making this collaboration a natural fit. This special project celebrates the shared values of honor, discipline, and duty that define both samurai and Jedi.

CLIPPED

June 01, 2024 by Samantha McRoberts

Exposing the scandal, play by play.

FX’s Clipped takes you behind the scenes of a notorious NBA owner’s racist remarks, captured on a tape heard around the world. Based on the hit ESPN 30 for 30 podcast The Sterling Affairs, this limited series charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.

  • We crafted historical context assets to provide audiences with references to the circumstances of the show and the backstories of the characters.

Influencer Campaign: We worked with the incredibly talented nail artist Chaun Legend to create custom nails for lead actress, Cleopatra Coleman to wear to the Red Carpet Premiere.

2014 Memes: Playing off of the era of the show we decided to lean into Meme culture and create some fun memes to be used as now streaming tune-in assets.

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

July 15, 2023 by Samantha McRoberts

The vampires are on the hunt.

In season five, Nandor feels his familiar (and sometimes friend) Guillermo slipping away as he seems to be spending much more time with Laszlo, whose skills as a gentleman scientist are put to the test as he tries to solve the mystery of the strange and very secret changes Guillermo is going through. Nadja, suffering the effects of a previously-undiagnosed supernatural hex, reconnects with her family — or at least, a family — from the Old Country, Colin pursues the path of so many energy vampires before him by running for political office and The Guide tries to figure out where she fits in as the relative newcomer to this tightly-knit group who’ve known each other for centuries.

The Guide's Guide to Shadows: The Guide has an all-seeing eye with the Vampires and is patiently awaiting her moment in the spotlight. For this scripted content piece, we had Kristen Schaal as The Guide recap Season 4 of FX's What We Do in the Shadows with a countdown of the season's best moments. Show footage was spliced into the video to get viewers up to speed with where the show left off and encourage bingeing before the Season 5 premiere.

Photobooth Tune-In: Each week as a Tonight asset, we shared hilarious snapshots of the characters, capturing their quirky personalities as if they had the opportunity to step into a photobooth.

Guillermo and Nandor Test Their Friendship: Kayvan Novak and Harvey Guillen are great friends, both on and off-screen. To spotlight their friendship, we had them sit down together at our marketing shoot and answer a series of questions about it in this hilarious out-of-character video piece.

JUSTIFIED: CITY PRIMEVAL

July 01, 2023 by Samantha McRoberts

He's back, but the rules have changed.

Having left the hollers of Kentucky 15 years ago, Raylan Givens now lives in Miami, a walking anachronism balancing his life as a U.S. Marshal and part-time father of a 15-year-old girl. His hair is grayer, his hat is dirtier, and the road in front of him is suddenly a lot shorter than the road behind.

The Title Says It All: We revitalized the Justified Instagram handle with a 9-post grid, highlighting nine of the main characters from the show. Each post introduced one of the characters and teased their motives for the season.

Is it Justified: A perfect match – We collaborated with TikTok Business Lawyer and Influencer Ugo Lord to create two videos for his recurring segment, Is It Justified?. For this collaboration, we provided Ugo with show footage from the series, asking him to assess whether the actions of our characters were justifiable.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Spearheaded the revamp of the Justified handles with legacy content on FB/TW/IG.

  • Over the course of the season, we reached over 45M followers, generated 19M video views, and gained 53K followers on Facebook.

  • Partnered with TikTok Influencer @UgoLord to create a series of videos that aligned both with the show’s brand and his authentic voice, gaining over 40K engagements

Cast Interrogation: After 7 years off-air, fan-favorite Raylan Givens returned to TV, bringing some new friends (and villains) along with him. To introduce the new cast and welcome back Timothy Olyphant, we shot cast members "interrogating” each other about their time working together and the new series, allowing us to showcase their chemistry in a creative and fun way.

KINDRED

November 30, 2022 by Samantha McRoberts

Question the ties that bind through time.

Adapted from the celebrated novel Kindred, by Hugo Award-winner Octavia E. Butler, the FX series centers on “Dana James,” a young Black woman and aspiring writer who has uprooted her life of familial obligation and relocated to Los Angeles, ready to claim a future that, for once, feels all her own. But, before she can settle into her new home, she finds herself being violently pulled back and forth in time. She emerges at a nineteenth-century plantation, a place remarkably and intimately linked with Dana and her family. An interracial romance threads through Dana’s past and present, and the clock is ticking as she struggles to confront secrets she never knew ran through her blood, in this genre-breaking exploration of the ties that bind.

Transition in Time: We filmed each character with a camera zooming into their eye to create a time-traveling effect. Each video started with an establishing action of the character in the world, then snapped zoomed to their eye and was followed by a character supercut of show footage. It ended with a zoom-out and the character being taken aback by what they witnessed.

Past is Present: Playing into the show’s time travel element, we combine the characters in their past clothing with items from the present day world.

Sam has an unusual therapeutic demand for Alan: curb his homicidal urges.

Takeout Food | Last Meal: Highlighting the haunting circumstances of the show and the unique elements of the food in the show. It takes a Saint to build an empire.
